V/A FM '69 Homage To Underground Radio
V/A FM '69 Homage To Underground Radio

Eclectic music choices abounded on '60s underground radio, (sometimes called free-form),
concept sets were born, and vocal opposition to the Viet Nam war all became
the new on air norm. The popularity of the format led to dramatic gains in
ad revenue and exponentially increased the value of FM stations. As the stations
became gold mines management was unwilling to risk their new found
fortunes on the whims of some minimum wage disk jockeys/music fans.
Corporate consultants were brought in to control music choices, and
eventually introduce playlists. Stations doubled the number of ads they ran and
dumped on air personalities that didn't stick to the script, resulting in less
spontaneity and creativity. Obsessed music fans need no longer apply.
Like many successes, underground radio carried the seeds of its own destruction,
and the best radio anyone ever heard quickly disappeared.
