"Dig!" DVD Few things disappoint more than a documentary without a point. "Dig" is 107 minutes of repetition about rock star wannabes, that never comes close to any real point. The story is of two of America's lesser alternative pop bands of the '90s, Portland bands with pun names, Brian Jonestown Massacre and Dandy Warhols, and their attempts to make it in the music business. If you want to know how talented these bands are, just ask them. Apparently the director, Ondi Timoner, beleived the hype and decided to document these band's "genius." What ends up actually being documented is the mental problems of Anton, leader of the Brian Jonestown Massacre, and sadly the film ultimately comes off as exploitation. The focus on the petty, and I do mean petty, rivalry between these bands seems hardly worth a mention, but instead seems to take up half the film. This film offers no evidence to support either of these bands being worth half of 107 minutes of your time. Although this film has been much acclaimed, I suspect those critics would tout any documentary portraying rock stars as assholes, as insightful and revelatory. The second disc of this double disc set offers only 3 Dandy Warhols videos, 3 Brian Jonestown Massacre live songs, an interview with the director, and some deleted scenes.
