Wesley Willis – “The Daddy of Rock’n’Roll” DVD
This sort of documentary/“day in the life” film about Wesley Willis was funded entirely by Canadian Taxpayer's money via The Canada Council For The Arts. Man, Canada can be pretty damn cool sometimes. So it's pretty hard to describe Wesley Willis, but I think he does it best himself. “I'm Wesley Willis, I'm 36 years old. I play music and do art. I have schizophrenia. I have chronic schizophrenia. ... I have three demons: Nervewrecker, Heartbreaker, and Meansucker. The demons tell me I'm a jerk, a bum and an asshole. I yell, I scream, I holler at people on buses – but when I'm with friends it's a joyride.” This documentary shows you Wesley Willis on joyrides and hellrides as well, almost entirely though Wesley Willis's own words, art, and music. This is an honest and compelling look at a human being with clear mental heath problems, but with an endearing personality and amazing strength of will to succeed. You see the love of his friends and get an idea of why his friends love him and look out for him. I liked this movie a lot, mainly because its does a really good job at profiling a mentally ill person without feeling exploitive at all, and that is a really hard feat to accomplish. For anyone who is a fan of Wesley Willis, this is a must see, and I think those of you who just like a good documentary would enjoy it too, I certainly did. Manny
