U.K. Subs – “Punk Can Take It” DVD
1979 promo flick for the Subs, shot by the incomparable Julian Temple, featuring live Subs footage (a few cuts are abbreviated but only a few) and Swindle-style “conceptual” bits, shot in the style of a wartime documentary (i.e. punks vs. the world), complete with voiceover from veteran BBC announcer John Snagge. Not sure when it was filmed in relation to the Great Rock & Roll Swindle, but Pistols associate Helen does show up and a Greek-like statue of Johnny Rotten is brought down by a mob of punks. The best non-Subs part of this is the sheer presence of Mr. Tenpole Tudor (who also appeared in Swindle); why didn’t this guy become a star? You also get a photo gallery and a tour through Nicky Garrett’s personal Subs memorabilia, complete with self-depreciating recollections. The only criticism I could make is that this is really short – the movie, photo gallery, and Nicky’s remembrances take up maybe half an hour total – though since this is apparently going for only $5.95 at least you’re getting good value for your money.
