Swingin Utters – “Live at the Bottom of the Hill” DVD
Reissue of the “Live at the Bottom of the Hill” video compilation originally released by New Red Archives under the Utters’ name (the other three acts are still here as “special guests”). The Nukes and Jack Killed Jill, if not life-changing, are solid enough to make you bemoan their releases’ fate to bargain bins nationwide. Social Unrest are caught during their all-too-brief reunion, and Swingin’ Utters are seen at their early prime. Performances are intercut with brief interview snippets as well. Multiple camera angles and some effects (double images, etc.) are utilized so it’s not just the ol’ one-camera-at-the-back-of-the-club deal. Unfortunately the way this was shot (on video), whenever the camera and/or the bands are moving too quickly there’s the “jittery”/”flickering”/”shaky” effect that gets to be a pain in the eyeballs after a while; since we’re not exactly talking “unplugged” performances you can probably guess how long it takes before you start to focus on anything but the TV screen.
