John Otway - "Beware Of the Flowers" DVD "Urgh - A Music War" was an early '80s film of concert performances by a couple dozen new wave and punk bands of the era. Devo, the Go-Go's, XTC, etc, but John Otway stole the show with his riotous deconstruction of folkie Bob Lind's "Cheryl's Going Home." It's good to see Otway still going strong 25 years later. Although bordering on performance art, Otway is a distinctive singer with more than enough good tunes to fill up the set, and a great backing band too. This disc includes two concerts, a club show from 1993, and a larger venue shoe from '97. The more intimate club show looks and sounds better, and it's a performance that's hard to top. All the favorites are included, "Cheryl's Going Home", "Really Free" and "Beware Of the Flowers", along with some zany covers, "House Of the Rising Sun", "Delilah.", etc. Also included is the video for his 2002 hit disco parody, "Bunsen Burner." Great fun. Mel @ www.cherryred.com |
