V/A - “Desperate Teenage Lovedolls” DVD
Allegedly filmed on a budget of $250 plus bus fare and inspired by “Beyond the Valley of the Dolls” and too many 70s flicks (made for TV and otherwise), this underground semi-classic (filmed in grainy super-8-rama) is finally reissued on DVD. The plot involves three chycks in a band trying to make their way to the top of the music world, dealing with creepy managers, not-quite-threatening authority figures, and murderous girl gangs along the way. Trashy as fug (no surprise that neither acting nor cinematography gained any Oscars), but intentionally so (as opposed to retroactive “we-meant-to-be-trashy-all-along”/Showgirls damage control), with McDonald spot-on as the appropriately sleazy manager (“Listen bitch, fame has a price!) and classic lines you haven’t heard in such quantity since Animal House, or at least Heathers. (Anyone who tried to make it through the modern-day “Josie & the Pussycats” will appreciate the lack of, um, market research on display here). Comes complete with such extras as outtakes, commentary tracks, filmographies (yes some of these folks appeared elsewhere), a look back at We Got Power both print and film, and Redd Kross’s video of “Lovedolls Superstar”. Fuck that pop-psuedo-punk video sampler, this is what you should get the popcorn ready for. David
