Bob Marley – “Legend” DVD
Most people around now don’t know just how much influence Reggae had on the punk scene in the UK, expressed by the likes of the excellent Stiff Little Fingers, the Clash, and the mediocre Police. Its chief component in the US seems to be in the bastardized (and lots of fun) ska. This DVD shows where it all began, square on the shoulders of Bob Marley. This is a fine collection of his songs, both in music video form, and live performances. One of the interesting aspects of this release is how powerful Marley’s music is live, both in concert and on TV shows, I believe more so than on record. Many big releases are represented here, like “Jammin’,” “I Shot the Sheriff,” and “One Love” (whose video has many cameos from musicians like Paul McCartney and Tears for Fears), for 52:38. Interspersed between the songs are interview snippets with the man. Also included is a 85 minute documentary from 1991 called “Time Will Tell,” which covers Marley’s life from 1960 when he formed the Wailers, through his death in 1981, by documentary footage and lots of Bob’s interviews. It covers his loves of Rasta and Herb, his assassination attempt, and his revolutionary ideas. And there is a lot of (mostly live) music, as well, as should be. RBF

Bob Marley - “Spiritual Journey” DVD + CD
This is an hour long documentary on the life of the late reggae superstar. There is archival footage and excerpts from interviews with Marley, but the story is mostly told in interviews with various experts. It’s educational and fairly interesting, but less than revelatory. The bonus music CD consists of frequently issued tracks like “Natural Mystic”, “Soul Shakedown Party”, “Soul Rebel” and 11 others, and the booklet has no credits for either the music or documentary.
